Hello! Over here I collate all the questions I get through physical meetups, emails and comments! If you have a question, don’t hesitate to ask! 🙂 I apologize that it’s a little messy now but when I’ve gotten enough questions, I’ll organize them into proper sections! For now I’ve tried to group similar questions together but nothing fancy. heh.

How old are you and what do you do?
I’m 28 this year and am adjusting to being a beginner teacher and life as a new wife. Life is a constant whirlwind but I constantly feel so blessed to be surrounded by so many people who love me!
I also go to church and try to squeeze time out between lessons to do things like blog (hehheh, very rarely sorry!), try out new recipes, make clay crafts, colour (yes, to destress I buy those colouring books for 3 year olds and colour them), surf the internet for pictures of random cute baby animals and plot how to fill my room with stickers and other useless knick- knacks without my mother finding out. *shhhh 🙂
I read somewhere that you said you were recovering from an ED. What ED is it and why can’t I find it anywhere now? Did you delete it? Why hide? Are you recovered?
I did mention briefly in my intro to the blog that I was/am recovering from binge eating disorder. As far as I know, that mention is still there and I haven’t removed it. The reason why I don’t bring it up often is because I don’t want to label myself as such. Also I think once you have a disordered relationship with food, it’s always going to be disordered, whether or not you say you are in recovery or recovered. To be honest, I think we all have a disordered relationship with food to some extent. It’s just a matter of how much we let it control us. Like everything else that we struggle with, there are good days and there are bad. Some months we live strong and free and some days we get bitten so badly we wonder why we even bother trying. But everyday we try some more and I think there is a lot of beauty in that.
Are you vegetarian? Will you be vegan one day?
I’m not vegetarian and I don’t think I’ll ever label myself as such even if I do go completely meat free one day. I prefer to keep my options open but do tend to veer towards a smaller portion of meat and more plant based foods. For example, I do love a small portion of steak paired together with a hearty salad and poached pears. So yums! I much prefer the lighter taste of fish these days too so they are my meat of choice. I don’t think I’ll ever be vegan. Then again, I can’t say for sure since if you had asked me years ago and I would still be chomping down a family sized bucket of KFC and trying to offer you some. Also I’ve seen a few animal slaughter videos recently and I’m quite sad about them 🙁 I try to support organic farming and breeding as much as possible. And while I think that the perfect diet consists of 90% plants and 10% protein (even rabbits get their B12 from little insects on the leaves they eat), the current practices of industrial farming do weigh on my conscience 🙁
Your meals look like they take a lot of time to do! Do you work? I want to be healthier but I definitely cannot afford the time to cook or to work out or anything.
(Update! Since moving to my parents-in-law’s house, I am a bit paiseh (just moved in! Give me some time!) to cook my own food so I usually lunchbox to school leftover from dinner which is great!)
Haha, I am the queen of efficiency and cook only once a week. In short, on Sunday nights, I freeze a week’s worth of food that I pull out of the freezer come weekday morning and reheat while showering. I start days as early as 7am and don’t return home till 11 at night. I pack ALL my food everyday because I know myself well enough to know that if left to my own devices, you would see me scarfing down junk and stress eating through the day. I eat 6 meals a day because I have very sensitive blood sugar levels and any drop will send me craving and desperate for (junk) food. Sometimes I wonder whether I have praders-willi sydrome but eating healthy and often has really helped me a lot so putting in effort to ensure I always have wholesome food on me is a small price to pay to make sure my health doesn’t take a tumble and affect the life I want.
That being said, I think I have to tell you that you cannot expect anything without putting in some sort of effort. Everyone wants to be healthier, but health and wholeness takes commitment and dedication just like anything else you might believe in. You show that commitment with the choices you make each and every day. You may not be able to keep up with that commitment all the time. Be it eating healthy or religion, as long as you believe in a perfect ideal, you will fail because you are imperfect. But don’t let perfection stand in the way of being good. Can’t do a full workout? Can’t afford the gym? Can’t afford organic? Can’t this, can’t that, might as well give up and don’t do at all? No. Just start small, maybe a clove of garlic today, a bunch of spinach tmr. It gets better everyday. 🙂
As for time, I like to think that everyone has 24hours. If someone else can do it, why not I? When you really believe in the goodness of something, you would be naturally compelled to do it and the more you do it, the easier it gets really 🙂 I used to be a total noob at cooking and once when I got home after grocery shopping, which took 3 hours because I took so long to find and identify produce, I almost burst into tears because I realised I didn’t really know what to do with all the stuff and I felt like I just wasted a ton of money when cai fan was just $3 and I didn’t even need to wash up after. But it gets better after a while, I promise.
Just start small, forgive yourself if you fail and move on. Tmr is a better day 🙂
I just started eating healthily and have dropped some weight but my mom keeps trying to force feed me junk food and saying that I am anorexic. What should I do?
Ahhhhhh… the mother issue. I could write books on this. And maybe I’ll dedicate a blog post to this one day
but for now, all I can say is, keep at it and be true to yourself. It’s not just mothers. You will find that in your journey to health, you are going to meet many people who will tease you, taunt you, worry about you etc. You will face so much negativity and guilt tripping/ emotional manipulation you would want to throw in the towel. Nevertheless, I cannot stress enough how important being honest to yourself is. If you are truly trying to be healthy, your mom will see it one day and support you. But if you are not, and your ‘eating healthy’ is causing you to look pale and sallow, you are cold all the time, your hair is dropping out, you spend an inordinate amount of time questioning your food, you are constantly suspicious, defensive, grouchy, sensitive and deep down inside, you know you are deeply miserable and unhappy because you are restricting to lose weight and not really gain health, then your mother has every reason to worry. Don’t hide behind the idea of ‘health’ if you are not truly healthy. Conversely, if you are truly trying to be healthy, then good on you! You don’t need to fear anyone saying anything about you. Today they will ridicule you and tease you. 6 months later, when you start radiating such happiness and positivity, they will be asking you what’s your secret 😉
Everybody keeps teasing me about eating healthy. I feel very discouraged. Have you ever encountered this?
This, together with the mother-daughter issue, I could write a book about. I cannot tell you how adverse people are to a healthy lifestyle. There is some sort of glamorization going on over an unhealthy lifestyle. Eat a bunch of junk and nobody says anything. People might even give you approving looks and you feel all YOLO and part of the team. Choose a salad for lunch and suddenly the whole world is on your case. “WAH! why so healthy?” “You on a diet?” “You also not fat what” etc etc etc.
The worst really, is when you claim to be healthy and everybody thinks you must eat a salad all the time. Eat a nugget and everyone would sneer ” I thought you are very healthy???? ”
People can be very very discouraging and critical. Remember that people will always criticize the goalkeeper for the one goal he let in rather than the 10000 he saved.
There was once when I was driving and I suddenly had a terribly dizzy spell. I was scared out of my wits. The car was on the highway and I didn’t know what to do as traffic was quite heavy. Everything was spinning around. I started taking deep breaths, desperately praying and hoping for a chance to filter left to the road shoulder. My driving companion noticed and asked what was wrong. I weakly mumbled that I felt weak and dizzy and the whole world was spinning. Instead of a sympathetic ear or some form of encouragement, my companion started berating me about how my ‘stupid diet’ was causing me all these and I ‘had better stop it’ etc etc etc. Seriously, I was so stressed at the moment and so scared I almost had a meltdown. It didn’t matter that I had not been to the doctor in years and battle crazy schedules everyday, fighting fit. When you try and live out an ideal, the moment you fail, people are going to attack it and call you a hypocrite.
All i can say is, whatever you do, people will judge. Filter out the negative and be appreciative of the encouragement. People will be kind as well. Focus on that. Just believe in your ideal and stick to
it. If it’s good, people will be won over. Words are meaningless.
(P.s I was alright eventually and continued driving, thank God. I analysed my diet that day and figured that perhaps since it was the time of the month and it was particularly heavy that month, I was too low on iron. I upped my iron consumption and the dizzy spell never returned)
Love the minion bento! But it says you put karaage in it? Isn’t it fried? Do you eat fried food?
Yes! I don’t restrict myself in any way and will eat anything. Except beansprouts. I. really. cannot. stand. it. I really believe restricting yourself in any way is not healthy at all. This does not mean that I will choose to eat fast food all the time. I live in the mentality that everything is okay to eat and I want to eat all the stuff that are good for me, not worry about what I should not be eating. There is a difference between negative, restrictive living, constantly questioning and pondering about what you shouldn’t be eating/ doing, lots of regret and guilt etc vs. focusing on filling your life with all the good stuff such that there is no room for the negative. My key to happy, whole living is a lot of whole food, mostly plant based, some meat, and some fried/ boxed food sometimes. Like why not, hey? One meal will not kill you. Just like one meal will not make you instantly healthier. The better I eat however, the less appetizing “unreal” food tastes to me.
Why don’t you have formspring?
Because I am a tech dinosaur.
Why do you call yourself Vegsmoothiebunny?
Haha. Coz I was SO surprised that a veggie hater like me could actually find love in a cup of blended vegetables! It was really the turning point for my health!
Why are you no longer vegsmoothiebunny?
Because somebody bought out my domain before I could get to it and I didn’t want to get into an expensive tussle fighting for it.
Is it possible to get 100g of protein from a vegan/ vegetarian diet?
It’s perfectly possible to get all your protein needs on a vegan/ vegetarian diet. As for the actual numbers, I wouldn’t know. I only advocate an approach where you eat in tune with your body. Perhaps your body needs more carbs today, perhaps more fibre, less fibre, more water etc. For more sources or if you are a man looking to meet your protein needs, you may want to check out No Meat Athlete. I have never calculated my protein intake so I don’ t know but since I try to eat perfectly proportionate meals each time with fat, carbs and protein at every meal, I have never worried I’m not eating enough of each.
Omg! Where do you buy your organic kale in Singapore?
The Organic Grocer at PasarBella. Other places also include Cold Storage’s Zenxin Organic, $5.99 for a bunch of 4 leaves which in my humble opinion, is a mega ripoff. Stick to Pasarbella’s! $10 for a mega bunch! (My instagram photos always feature yellowing kale because the bunch is so huge I have a hard time finishing it in time. haha. Good problem to have!)
What are your top healthy food? What is your meal plan and exercise schedule like?
I exercise.. rarely. And I drive everywhere. :/ This is not good of course, and I’m working on fitting in some heart health workouts. I absolutely abhor running but I do love long walks and jumping up and down. (Strange, I know) As for my meals, I do plan them (to aid grocery shopping on sundays) and I try to eat as wide a variety of food as possible. Some days shrimp, some days crab, some days figs, some days pomegranates, some days apples. There are just so many combinations of yuminess! My meals are predominately protein and fat and a little complex carbs. My top healthy food has got to be coconut oil, chia seeds and broccoli. I get most of my fat from coconut oil which has great health benefits. If you are looking for where to buy organic, cold pressed coconut oil or MCT powder in Singapore, check out http://www.cocos.com.sg/. It’s a Singapore based company- support local! 🙂 (Hehheh, don’t say I’m bias.. you can also get coconut oil at any major healthfood store like supernature organic etc but I know someone who works at Cocos so I can get it cheaper. Mail me if you would like a discount too ;))
I really want to lose weight and eat healthy! But it’s so hard! Help!
Check out The FHB 12345 Challenge for a kick start! Also read up on the article on nutrition or search ‘getting started’ within the blog! The beginning is always the hardest but don’t give up! If you have instagram, add me and talk to me there! It’s always good to have people to cheer you on!
Is being Vegetarian healthy?
Vegetarian is just a label that the person does not eat meat but may eat animal products like eggs and milk. If you choose to soak your veggies in oil or eat biscuits each day, that isn’t healthy either. Forget the labels, just eat a variety of wholesome, natural food.
What supplements do you recommend?
I don’t eat supplements for now but I’m looking into getting maybe a calcium one or an iron one. I don’t know. I try to get everything I need from my food but I’m open to trying things. Any suggestions?
You say you don’t eat added sugar. What is your take on artificial sweeteners? Or natural ones like agave?
I try not to eat anything that has any added sugar whether real or fake. I get a lot of sugar from the fruits I eat every day. Anyway my tastebuds have changed a lot and I no longer have a sweet tooth. (although I wouldn’t say no to a mini molten lava cake. Mhmm!) In fact, a lot of store bought food now are too strong tasting for me especially if there is a large amount of additives.
What should I eat to lose weight?
For a start, healthy, plant based fat/ oils, complex carbs, and lean protein.
Or just cut out Soda. Just never ever drink it again. ever. never. ever, ever, ever. (okay, I think you got my point)
How can I lose weight fast?
Do you want to lose weight fast or lose fat fast? If you want to lose weight fast, it’s simple. Just dehydrate and starve yourself for a week. When your cells are depleted of water and glycogen, your weight on the scales will drop. But is that what you REALLY want? The moment you eat, your cells will fill with water again and BAM. 3kg increase on the scales and severe tummy bloating.
For lasting fat lost, I’m sorry, you’ve heard this over and over again and the truth is hard but consistent, healthy choices everyday, be it mental or physical, will cause the weight to drop from true fat loss. Balanced diet, (we are not talking about a cookie in each hand here), and exercise.
I want to recover from anorexia but I’m so scared the food I eat would make me put on weight. What should I do? I don’t even know whether I really want to recover but I don’t want to make my mom sad anymore. Sometimes I feel like I’m such a burden.
Congrats about wanting to recover! That is always the first step 🙂 I’m sure your mom is very proud of you. Firstly, if you are severely underweight, like a BMI of 14 or so, you NEED to put on weight. It’s just not healthy. Secondly, stop thinking about weight, think about health. Think about strength. Think about what you want in your life. What did you think of when you were bigger sized? That if you lost all the weight, you would be able to achieve so much in life right? Look at you now at a smaller sized, with all your weight off. Did those dreams come true? Are you living happier now? Better? More confidently? Don’t let Ana lie to you. She only wants to rob you of your dreams. Eat well for nutrition. When you are filled with the good stuff, your body will know what to do with it. You will gain weight but only what your body needs to live out your dreams. Trust the process, trust yourself.
I am recovering from anorexia and I don’t know if I should eat clean or allow myself to eat the foods I fear?
When people recover from an eating disorder, they need to heal both physically and mentally. Eat clean, for physical healing and eat a couple of your preciously restricted food (moderately) for mental healing.
I just saw the doctor and he diagnosed me with Bulimia. I am not even skinny. And I don’t purge after eating. WHY BULIMIA? I do not have an eating disorder!
Eating disorders are not characterized by the size of your body. They are characterized by your mind. Bulimia is in essence, compensation. Do you feel the need to purge after eating? Take laxatives? feel guilty enough to need to exercise to burn it off? Feel terribly panicky and anxious that what you ate could possibly make you gain weight? Do you feel fat all the time? Constant obsession and pendulum- swinging of ‘sinning’ and ‘compensation’ is bulimia no matter what size you are. Eating disorders have nothing to do with the body. Everybody! Stop looking at people’s body sizes and qualifying them to be problematic or not! HEALTH- both mental and physical, is what you should be focusing on 🙂
How many calories do you eat a day?
I don’t count but for the purpose of this question, I input today’s meals into MFP’s calorie counter and got 1745 calories. Someone told me this is quite a bit though I wouldn’t know but I stand by what I say. I used to eat 1200 calories of unwhole food last time and feel like crap. Now I eat more, and better and the weight doesn’t increase or decrease. I really recommend not calorie counting.
Should I eat organic?
It really depends on you. I really would like to support organic so I choose it when I can and when my wallet doesn’t threaten to run into a corner and cry. I mostly choose it for the produce I blend or eat raw
Why is it so hard to be healthy in Singapore?
Our food landscape is a culmination of our choices. Demand drives supply. There is nothing we can complain about in this man made world since we are man ourselves. We can only be the change we want to see.
I can’t stop comfort eating. The scales keep going up and I’ve never felt worst in my life. What should I do? I feel like killing myself.
If you want to binge, binge on healthy food. Go eat 5000 apples. The reason why binges are so vicious is because they are usually salt and sugar laden or carb heavy. These raise insulin and cause a cycle of cravings and dependence. Your binge is going to cause you binge even more later on. There is no other choice but to break it.Whatever it is, don’t give in to the McDonalds meal thinking you can purge it later. You are just going to start on a vicious cycle. But you don’t need to be told about that, we’ve all been there.
How can I get abs quick?
Oh dearie dear. Perhaps pressing your stomach to a wire fence? 😉
I’m really interested in combining faith and my diet together. Have you heard of the Daniel Diet? Did Jesus eat meat? I’ve researched on paleo and I really think eating the way our ancestors did makes the most sense. Low carb and lots of meat. What do you think?
Uhm. Yeah, Jesus ate meat. He would have had lamb, and fish but in small amounts. lLike in the ratio of 5 loaves and 2 fishes. Haha. He certainly was not a low carber though! If anything, I’m sure he ate loads of bread. But er, that being said, I think what we can learn here is not what he ate but what he focused on and didn’t worry about. I really think true living is when you don’t worry so much on what you are eating but you go do all the right stuff and eventually your life would be filled with all the good things that there is no space for all the negative 🙂
My son has epilepsy and you mentioned that changing his diet would help. How so?
I am not a medical doctor so you might want to consult one on this issue but I’ve heard and seen from a friend whose 3 year old daughter has had success on the ketogenic diet which is a high fat, low carb diet. Generally, all children (and adults!) would benefit from a whole food diet. Also if you are seeking healing through faith, you can also check
out this testimonial.
What blender do you use?
I use a Shimono blender for everyday on the go blending because it’s PERFECT. The blending unit is a to-go cup so I can just blend in 2 min, grab and leave the house. It retails for $128 now but I bought it for only $99 a few years back. The price increase is really uncalled for though *upset* but I think for the convenience it’s brought… I’ll still purchase it at this price.
What’s the difference between a food processor and a blender?
I think they are almost the same? I would say that a blender is usually of a jug- shape used to mix soft solids like fruit, liquids and maybe ice together for drinks or soups etc but a food processor has a wider bowl shape container for you to cut, chop and mince solid food. I use my blender to make smoothies and soups (I have 2 kinds) and I use my food processor to chop veggies (sorry, too lazy to chop by hand), mince meat for chicken nuggets, nutella or falafe etc.
What brand of containers do you use to bring your food out?
I’ve used a tiger thermal brand container that comes in a bento set for a pretty long time. It looks something like this:
I also use a thermal soup container, a cooler bag, normal tupperwares etc depending on what I bring out for the day. The thermal contaniners are really expensive but they last a long long time. My only gripe is that they are so small so I can’t squeeze a lot of food into it. I also make mostly soups and stews for my meals because the hot liquid stays hot best in the thermal. Just rice alone and I’ll be opening up my box to a cold sad lunch. With stews and soups I can eat them with my rice/ pasta and the food is still REALLY hot at lunch time.
Hi, we are XXX slimming/ cosmetics company/ XXX Detox fast Company and would like to sponsor an advertised post for $XXXX. Would you write it for us?
Sorry, but I’m going to have to decline your kind generosity. I’m am very grateful and a little overwhelmed that this humble space has attracted enough people to be considered sponsorship worthy but I started this blog on a whim so not taking up sponsorships is no loss to me at all. I would consider a great loss however, if this space becomes a hot house of weight loss information and diet products or the latest technology that claim to help you burn fat. I am not interested AT ALL in how a person looks outside. Body Size tell ms me NOTHING about a person’s health. I’m also NOT interested in one off juice detoxes etc etc etc. Life is more than just your diet. I want to advocate life long healthy living in every aspect, not a 2 week detox cleanse. I have no impressions that this space would ever churn money because what I’m encouraging is not profit making at all- no products, no supplements, just everything in moderation, more homecooked food and a fuller life. I want YOU dear reader, to rely on YOURSELF for YOUR health.
However, if you have a cause you believe in, products which do not encourage a quick fix mentality to health, a place that people can bond, a healthy living food place or you are keen on social change/ just want to share a happy thing that happened to you today, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org 🙂
Do you work for an MLM company and are you trying to insidiously sell us something? / Do you work for Herbalife?
Hahahaha. Uhm, no?
Do you get bloated on such a high fibre diet?
It hasn’t affected me so far but I don’t think I have a very high fibre diet overall as my portions are not insanely big. I also eat 6-8 times a day so I guess it’s smaller and doesn’t affect so much? I do drink A LOT of water a day though. 🙂
Thanks for sharing the 10 resolutions for 2014. I’m just curious, what are some of your personal resolutions?
WELL! Haha. I’m not really the resolution making type actually. But I guess 2014 for me is a new year full of exciting (scary?) change 🙂 For one, I made the decision at the end of last year to let go and switch from a very cushy job to something else. It involved a 50% pay cut but so far I’m still fine (It’s only day 8 of January haha) But I guess it’s in line with what I want to do this year? This year I want to experiment with living life undefined. I want to experience what life is like if I love without fear of rejection (not just romantically), define myself from the perspective of the eternal and not societal standards (you don’t know how hard it was to start this blog because I felt like I didn’t look like a fitness model but that was such a stupid thing to think right? Why should I perpetuate the view that a single body type has the authority to talk about health. EVERYBODY can talk about health and EVERYBODY can contribute no matter at which stage you are) I want to do things without chasing societal definitions of success. Just for one year. If I can just touch one life, or inspire one person this year, I would consider it as a year well lived. It’s been crazy-scary letting go of everything I know of course and definitely out of my comfort zone but I’ve met many inspiring, supportive people along the way sooo.. we’ll see how it goes 🙂
Do you photoshop your photos?
(Question rewritten because the original question was written in a rather uhm.. ungentlemanly manner. I would humbly request for civility in questions please 🙂 )
No I don’t. My tummy in the hawker post was certainly NOT photoshopped. HAHAHAHA. why would I want to photoshop extra fats onto myself. Anyway, as previously mentioned, I am a tech dinosaur and honestly before this, I hardly spend much time online or on tv or any of such things actually (Yes, I am an old grandma.). I do not have photoshop on any of my computers. I do fix the sharpness/ brightness of the photos and maybe add filters because it makes the pictures pretty but that’s about all I know how to do. (Most pictures are shot with an Iphone 5) If someone would teach me how to remove backgrounds of pictures without photoshop that’d be great. 🙂 Also, I don’t feel defined by my body so you just gotta accept it as it is 🙂
